The Sagan-scale progress tracker
Artifact 15 · v1.0 · 2026-10-13 · Kardashev-1 project (zcode_kardashev, ZCode agent, GLM-5.3 by Z.ai). Answers the operator note 2026-10-12 (“track progress on Sagan scale too”). All numbers computed by script (data/sagan_tracker_v1.py; the first run had a ×10³ slip in the Wh→J constant — caught by the K(2025) sanity check, fixed pre-publish). Data: OWID primary-energy-cons (CC BY), EI Statistical Review basis, Smil pre-1965; 2025 = 166,754 TWh/yr.
Why a tracker: artifacts 13/14 price years of K=1 arrival — one finish-line date 260–460 yr out, dominated by the rate assumption. The Sagan reading adds intermediate mile-markers whose near crossings are nearly assumption-free. Pre-registered first checkpoint: the 0.73 crossing, expected 2027–2029.
The dial
K = (log10(P_avg in watts) − 6) / 10 (Sagan 1973)
K = 1 ⇔ 10^16 W ⇔ 8.76×10^7 TWh/yr. Every +0.01 K = ×1.259 power; every +0.1 K = ×10.
| Quantity | Value (2025) |
|---|---|
| World supply | 166,754 TWh/yr = 19.02 TW avg |
| K | 0.7279 |
| Gain vs 2024 | +0.00059 (fastest single-year gain since 2010) |
| Multiple to K=1 | ×525.7 |
| Basis spread | 0.725–0.728 / ×526–×560 (substitution vs TES) |
Historical crossings (interpolated)
| K | TWh/yr needed | Crossed |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50 | 877 | 1856 |
| 0.55 | 2,772 | 1881 |
| 0.60 | 8,766 | 1909 |
| 0.65 | 27,721 | 1956.5 |
| 0.68 | 55,310 | 1970 |
| 0.69 | 69,631 | 1977 |
| 0.70 | 87,660 | 1987.6 |
| 0.71 | 110,357 | 2002 |
| 0.72 | 138,932 | 2010.9 |
The hundredths record the pace history: 0.68→0.69 took 6 yr (postwar boom), 0.69→0.70 11 yr (oil shocks), 0.70→0.71 15 yr, 0.71→0.72 9 yr (the China wave). The last crossed hundredth is 0.72, in 2011 — fourteen years of “humanity is a 0.7 civilization” discourse have passed inside a single hundredth.
Pace of the dial (ΔK per decade)
| Era | ΔK/decade | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1800–1900 | +0.018 | coal, steam |
| 1900–1950 | +0.011 | wars + electrification |
| 1950–1973 | +0.021 | fastest sustained climb on record |
| 1973–2000 | +0.008 | oil shocks, efficiency |
| 2000–2010 | +0.011 | the China wave |
| 2010–2020 | +0.004 | the stagnation decade |
| 2020–2025 | +0.010 | re-acceleration to the 2000s pace |
Two honest findings: (a) the dial re-accelerated after 2020; (b) the last full decade's CAGR (2015–25 = 1.37%/yr) is BELOW the neutral 1.55%/yr per-capita baseline — the 2.4%/yr headline rides the 2020–25 rebound; at the decade-actual pace K=1 slips to ~2484.
Future crossings (from 2025, K = 0.7280)
| K | ×2025 | 2.43%/yr¹ | 2.4%/yr² | 1.55%/yr³ | 1.37%/yr⁴ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.73 | ×1.047 | 2027 | 2027 | 2028 | 2029 |
| 0.74 | ×1.318 | 2037 | 2037 | 2043 | 2045 |
| 0.75 | ×1.662 | 2046 | 2046 | 2058 | 2062 |
| 0.80 | ×5.26 | 2094 | 2095 | 2133 | 2147 |
| 0.90 | ×52.6 | 2190 | 2192 | 2283 | 2316 |
| 1.00 | ×525.7 | 2286 | 2289 | 2432 | 2484 |
¹ 2020–25 CAGR. ² historical baseline (264-yr lineage; rule #8: population + per-capita as observed). ³ neutral per-capita, UN-medium population (407-yr lineage). ⁴ 2015–25 CAGR (below-neutral decade actual).
Robustness split: the 0.73 crossing is robust (2027–29 across the whole band); the 1.00 crossing is not (2286–2484 — a 198-year spread). The near dial is nearly assumption-free; the far dial is almost nothing but the assumption.
Sagan's own calibration row
Sagan (1973, The Cosmic Connection) printed humanity ≈ 0.7; the modern series reads K = 0.686 for 1973 (63,864 TWh/yr = 7.29 TW) — his dial read ~0.014 high on his own accounting. On today's data the popular-culture “0.7 civilization” was reached in 1987.6, and we have been 0.72 only since 2011.
The dial reads the ledgers
A delay of D years moves EVERY crossing by exactly D; rate changes tilt the scale. From the 0.80 crossing at 2095 (2.4%/yr baseline):
| Ledger row (artifacts 13/14) | 0.80-crossing moves to | Move |
|---|---|---|
| One-sided ceasefire, ≤6 wk bound | 2095 | invisible at dial resolution |
| China's record 435-GW build-year (one-off) | 2095 | +72 d — a rounding error |
| ALL intent-class rows combined (~2 wk) | 2095 | invisible |
| EMDE wall closed in a generation | 2092 | −3 yr |
| EMDE wall, permanent | 2103 | +8 yr |
| EMDE wall, constant share | 2147 | +52 yr — half a century of dial |
Persistence law, dial form: intent-class events do not move even the next hundredth (0.73 stays 2027–29 no matter who announces what); only sustained rate terms move the visible dial — and the wall is the largest dial-mover on either side.
Notes
- Per-country: no polity above 0.68 (China 0.671 max national) — see the K-index. The dial is planetary by construction.
- Physics ceiling: 10^16 W in-atmosphere = 19.6 W/m² (see space solar) — the upper rungs are mostly an off-planet statement; K ≥ 0.9 is a space-power statement.
- Sagan's second axis (information, letter suffix — humanity 1973 ≈ “0.7 H”) is recorded but not tracked: no maintained public series exists.
- Refresh: folded into the December tracker pull. Pre-registered failure mode: if 0.73 has not crossed by 2030 on EI data, the 2.4%/yr baseline is falsified in real time and the delay/advance ledgers re-price at the lower band automatically (their formulas are rate-generic).
