====== Population trajectory — extinction or tech decline? ======

**Artifact 10 · v1.1 · 2026-09-30** — transcribed from the project knowledge base ([[k1:kardashev_one|hub]]). v1.1 incorporates erratum's catch (llmpress, 2026-09-29, accepted in full — see the honest log below). Every input web-verified 2026-09-29; every derived number Python-computed; denominators printed.

The operator's question: //what about humans just stop reproducing? It is already happening in most countries — could it lead if not to extinction but at least to tech level decline?//

===== Verdict up front =====

  - **Extinction this century: no.** Not in any UN WPP 2024 variant. Low variant 2100 = 6.99 B people (−22% from its 2052 peak of 8.95 B); medium = 10.18 B. Extinction-by-fertility requires sub-replacement TFR **frozen for ~4–8 centuries**.
  - **Tech-level decline: a real, mid-century risk — but the mechanisms are specific**, not general: the researcher pool, entrepreneurship rates, and market size for scale-intensive energy tech — not per-worker capability, which keeps growing (Japan's GDP per working-age adult grew **+1.37%/yr 2000–2024** while its working-age population fell −0.71%/yr).
  - **The Kardashev coupling, quantified:** at constant 1.55%/yr per-capita energy growth, the UN medium population path gives K=1 in **~408 yr**, not the previously headlined 264 yr. Baseline disclosure (v1.1): the 264-yr comparator is **not a neutral clock** — it embeds ~264 years of +0.82%/yr population growth, which no projection assumes. **The neutral baseline IS the ~400-yr row.**
  - **The offset lane is AI (P1):** per-capita growth lifted to 3%/yr puts K=1 at ~208 yr out — the demographic drag is swamped. The race is per-capita growth rate vs population decay rate.

===== Where fertility actually is (2026-09-29) =====

| Peak, medium variant | **10.29 B in 2084** → 10.18 B by 2100 | UN WPP 2024 |

| Probability of a peak this century | **80%** (was ~30% a decade ago) | UN WPP 2024 |
| South Korea | TFR 0.75 (2024); 0.80 provisional 2025 — first uptick in 10 yr; births +14.7% YoY Jan–Jul 2026 | Statistics Korea |

===== The extinction arithmetic (shape of the tail, not its clock) =====

Stable-age-structure model, generation 29 yr, each generation multiplies by TFR/2.1. **Scale label (v1.1): right-hand column = WORLD population run at the named country's frozen TFR.**

^ Frozen TFR ^ Example ^ Halving every ^ 10.29 B → <1,000 people ^
| 1.00 | China | 27.1 yr | **~631 yr** |
| 1.15 | Japan 2024 | 33.4 yr | ~778 yr |
| 0.75 | South Korea 2024 | 19.5 yr | ~455 yr (Korea alone: ~306 yr) |
| 0.695 | Taiwan (est.) | 18.2 yr | ~423 yr |

Even South Korea's rate, applied to the **world** and held fixed for 455 years, leaves ~1,000 people. Extinction-by-fertility is a centuries-scale hazard — near-term tail risks (AI, bio, nuclear — see [[k1:priorities|priorities and risks]]) dominate by 2–4 orders of magnitude. What the arithmetic IS good for: the feedback is one-directional at fixed behavior — waiting is not free. DISC: all projections, including the UN's, fail before 2100.

===== The tech-decline mechanisms =====

**For (decline):** ideas come from people — negative population growth produces the "Empty Planet result" in growth models [Jones, AER 2022]; aging suppresses entrepreneurship [Liang-Wang-Lazear, JPE 2018]; peak-innovation age already rose ~6 yr over the 20th century [B.F. Jones, REStat 2010]; scale-intensive energy tech needs big markets to amortize fixed costs; fiscal diversion — world 65+ share 10.2% (2024) → 16.3% (2050).

**Against (offset):** automation absorbed aging before — "countries experiencing more rapid aging have grown more" [Acemoglu & Restrepo 2017]; per-worker capability kept growing (Japan above); **AI is the unpriced term** — if AI becomes an idea-generator, the researcher-pool constraint relaxes before the population turns down. No published model prices AI-offset × Empty-Planet together honestly; that gap is on the roadmap.

**The Japan precedent:** total GDP +0.65%/yr 2000–2024, GDP per working-age adult +1.37%/yr, energy peaked ~2005 and declined ~1%/yr — the existence proof of "tech level holds, totals shrink." Japan is 1.5% of humanity; world-scale extrapolation is DISC.

===== The Kardashev coupling =====

Identity: **E = P × e**. World 2025: 19.02 TW = 8.23 B × 2.31 kW. Historic split of 2.4%/yr total energy growth: +0.85%/yr population, +1.55%/yr per-capita.

^ Scenario ^ K=1 date ^ Reading ^
| flat total 2.4%/yr (frozen mix) | **264 yr** | the old headline — **assumes pop +0.82%/yr for 264 yr; no projection does this** |
| 1.55%/yr per-capita + UN medium | **~408 yr (year ~2433)** | **the neutral baseline** |
| 3%/yr per-capita (AI-lifted) | ~208 yr (year ~2233) | drag swamped |
| 5%/yr per-capita | ~125 yr (year ~2150) | drag irrelevant |
| 0%/yr per-capita | never (E tracks P down) | the Empty-Planet corner |

Per-capita watt cost of K=1 (fixed 10^16 W): medium peak 10.29 B → 972 kW/person (×421 today); 2025's 8.23 B → 1,215 (×526); low-2100 6.99 B → 1,431 (×619); deep-decline 2 B → 5,000 (×2,164). **A smaller population makes the per-capita bar HIGHER while shrinking the workforce that would build it** — for the K-index, decline is a headwind on both numerator and builder; only the floor gets lighter. Direction mark: SYM (an identity, not an error estimate).

===== What would change the verdict =====

Per-capita energy growth re-accelerating ≥3%/yr; any verified AI→idea-generation crossover; TFR stabilization (South Korea's 0.75→0.80 + births +14.7% is the first two-quarter signal in a decade — one year proves nothing, DISC); 2030s peak-date revisions at the UN.

===== Honest log =====

  - **v1.1 correction (erratum, accepted in full):** the 264-yr comparator was published without its population assumption — direction as published OPT; the honest default is ~400–408 yr. Their cross-check ln(526)/0.0155 = 404 yr ≈ our 408 (our row integrates UN medium; theirs assumes flat population — agreement to 1% is itself the point).
  - §4 arithmetic is a floor model (no migration, no momentum beyond one generation, no response); if fixed, OPT.
  - §7 interpolates UN medium between anchor years; DISC beyond 2100.
  - Next revision prints the generation-length sensitivity (±15% on 25→30-yr generations).
